In our home rebuild, we have installed smart door locks that use a numeric code to lock and unlock the doors: Front door, Back (kitchen) door, and the Garage back door.

We also picked a Eufy video doorbell, and added two Eufy security cameras (at the North and South ends of the house) to supplement the existing Arlo and Kasa cameras. The general idea is to keep the number of "smart home" phone apps as low as possible.

As of September 2026, the Eufy brand has been absorbed into the Anker One brand from the same manufacturer.

Locks

The locks we have chosen are the Eufy E31 deadbolt locks. They operator on a fairly large battery, which needs to be recharged every few months. Slide the battery cover off on the inside of the lock, lift out the battery and plug it into a USB-C charging cord for a few hours. When it is fully charged, the LED on the battery turns green.

The battery is very large (11,000 mAh) and takes a whole day to recharge. I bought a spare battery to switch into the lock as the battery from that lock is being rechrged. For now it lives in the "charger drawer"in my desk.

On the inside, a lever turns 90 degrees to lock and unlock the deadbolt, like on any simple deadbolt.

On the outside, there is a round fingerprint sensor on the top. Below that is a 10-digit keypad for entering a numeric access code (4-8 digits). We have initially defined 4 codes:

Lars (with fingerprint (RtTh)
Bird
Elidia
Seguro - removed at the end of August 2026
Kathy Gleason (our dogsitter) enabled only for times when we are traveling

In the beginning, all the codes were "permanent" and "all-time", but later, we have deleted Seguro and setting schedules (from-to or days of the week) for "guest" codes.

To add or change codes, you need the app (see below).

Unlock

If the door is locked, you unlock it as follows (from the outside):

Touch the circle at the top: Keypad numbers light up
Enter your code digits. Touch firmly enough to hear a beep for each digit.
Touch the shield with he check mark at the lower right.

You should hear the deadbolt retract, and see the shield turn blue.

Lock

To lock, follow a simpler procedure:

Touch the shield. The shield turns red/orange, and the deadbolt slides shut.

Video Doorbell Camera

When someone pushes the round blue button, it makes a loud chime sound and wakes up the Eufy app on my phone.

To make recordings, it needs a MicroSD storage card (Speed class 10, U3 or V30. To access the card slot (or to get to the QR code for setup) one needs to release the camera from its mount, using the pinhole on top of the camera.

To control these, I have installed the Eufy App on my smartphone. The login is keyed to

Sharing Access from Multiple Phones

Since Lars set up the system, his account (lars@beagle-ears.com) is the primary account.
Additional users, must each install the "Eufy Security" app, and create an account using THEIR emaill address and a password.
The primary user then logs in and does "Add User" (or Invite), giving the email address of the person to be added, and choose permission level(Viewer or Admin). Admin is required to arm/disarm the system.
Login on the secondary device and Accept the invitation.
