VANAGON Dictionary

When I started reading the VANAGON list, I was really confused about the terminology. People were throwing around terms like "type II" and "T4" and "breadbox" and I would be very confused. Here is an attempt to sort some of this out.

Types

The BIG distinction in VolksWagens is the TYPE.

Type I = the BUG
The bug has gone through a few model variations, although I'm not too sure of the model years:
- ??-?? Pre-WW II
- ??-?? Small windows, split screen
- ??-?? Larger windows
- ??-?? Larger Window in the rear
There are also several body style variations; most notably the Karmann-Ghia sportster.
Type II = the BUS
The Germans call these "Transporters". They come in several body styles (Bus, Camper, Pickup, double-cab pickup), and there are generations that go across the body styles:
- 50-68 T1 MicroBus (split windshield)
  All use the Bug (type I) engine.
- 69-80 T2 Bus, one windshield ("bay windows", "the breadloaf")
  69-71 use the type I engine.
  72-80 use aircooled type IV engine.
- 80-91 T3 Vanagon
  80-84? use aircooled type IV engine.
  85-91 use watercooled pancake engine ("wasserboxer")
- 91-.. T4 EuroVan (front wheel drive, camper is by Winnebago))
  92-.. use 5-cylinder in-line engine (in front)
Type III = Variant (Fastback/Squareback/Notchback)
Type IV = ???
The type IV seems to be most famous for its engine, which is used on buses 72-84 and also on Porsche 914.
